The Glorious Restaurant and Inn in the heart of Antwerp lives up to its name, not just in looks but also on the plate and in the glass. The restaurant, which won a coveted Michelin star last year, is on two floors of a picturesque brick building. Downstairs is a cosy wine bar with a few tables, and upstairs is the main dining room where chef Johan Van Raes creates delicious dishes in his open kitchen.
The Glorious Restaurant is known for its gourmet cuisine made from the freshest ingredients and for its exceptional wine list. Owner and host Jurgen Lijcops, who has had a 25-year career in the hospitality industry, was named “Best Sommelier of Belgium”, and he has chosen a diverse selection of fine wines to offer his customers. The family-owned property also has three charming guestrooms.
The restaurant and inn opened in 2009 and has become one of Antwerp’s most highly rated culinary destinations as well as a luxurious boutique hotel. Jurgen Lijcops explains, “We offer our guests a truly personalised experience and we focus on anticipating their needs. For example, if a regular customer always orders the same bottle of wine, when we see him come in the door we set aside that bottle for him. Our restaurant features many choices at different prices, and we have a menu where a wine is paired with each dish. What pleases me most is to see my customers enjoying the good food and wine we serve them. Our guests appreciate our emphasis on quality.”
Three elegant guestrooms
The three luxurious guestrooms in the inn are elegantly decorated, each in a unique style. All are equipped with a flat-screen cable TV, free WiFi Internet connections, air-conditioning, a minibar, a desk, and a modern bathroom. The Glorious Restaurant and Inn is ideally located a five-minute stroll from Antwerp’s Museum of Modern Art and near the Pacificatiestraat tram stop. It is surrounded by the city’s top business, cultural, entertainment and shopping venues.
The Glorious Restaurant and Inn attracts both business and leisure travellers. Jurgen Lijcops says, “We have more business guests during the week and more families on the weekends. Our customers tell others about us and this is how we attract most of our new visitors. I think that the way to improve a restaurant’s image is by always giving your best to your clients. People recognise our efforts.”
